About Ford Engines
Ford Motor Company has been producing reliable engines for over a century. Their Power Stroke diesel lineup, developed in partnership with Navistar and later in-house, has powered millions of Super Duty trucks. The EcoBoost series revolutionized turbocharged gasoline engines, while the Triton V8 and V10 engines remain workhorses in commercial applications.
The Ford Power Stroke diesel story began in 1994 with the 7.3L, a Navistar-designed engine that became legendary for its reliability in F-250 and F-350 trucks. The 6.0L Power Stroke (2003-2007) brought more power but also introduced some reliability challenges that Ford later addressed. The 6.4L (2008-2010) added twin turbochargers, and the current 6.7L Power Stroke, designed entirely in-house by Ford, is considered one of the most capable diesel pickup engines ever built, producing up to 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. On the gasoline side, Ford's EcoBoost technology, introduced in 2009, uses direct injection and turbocharging to deliver V8-like power from smaller displacement engines, with the 3.5L EcoBoost becoming the best-selling engine in the F-150 lineup.
Ford Engine Buying Guide
When shopping for a remanufactured Ford engine, it's important to know your exact engine code, which can be found on your vehicle's VIN plate or engine tag. Ford uses different engine variants across model years, so providing your VIN ensures you get the correct replacement. For Power Stroke diesels, pay attention to the specific generation (7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L, or 6.7L) as they are not interchangeable. For EcoBoost engines, the turbocharger configuration and direct injection system should be included in the remanufacturing process. Always verify that the remanufacturer performs dynamometer testing — this is the gold standard for quality assurance.
