About International / Navistar Engines

International Harvester, now Navistar International, has been building trucks and engines since 1902. The DT466 became one of the most reliable medium-duty diesels ever produced, powering millions of school buses and delivery trucks. The MaxxForce series brought modern emissions technology to the lineup, while the A26 engine represents the latest in fuel efficiency.

Navistar International's engine heritage spans over a century. The DT466, introduced in the 1970s, became the gold standard for medium-duty diesel engines, powering International 4300 and 4400 trucks, school buses, and countless commercial vehicles. Its mechanical simplicity and durability made it a favorite among fleet operators. The DT466E added electronic controls while maintaining the engine's legendary reliability. Navistar also supplied the T444E (7.3L) and VT365 (6.0L) engines to Ford for the Power Stroke program. The MaxxForce series attempted to meet emissions standards using EGR-only technology without SCR, which led to some reliability issues. Navistar has since partnered with Cummins to supply engines for their latest trucks.

International / Navistar Engine Buying Guide

When purchasing a remanufactured International engine, identify the specific variant using the engine serial number plate. The DT466 family includes the mechanical DT466, electronic DT466E, and high-torque DT466 HT variants. For MaxxForce engines, the emissions certification year is critical for compliance. Always provide your VIN when requesting a quote.
